The Hotel Bahia Palace was built in 1986 and was the first resort hotel in the Azores. Located at one end of the longest beach (dark sand) on the island, 18km from Ponta Delgada, its size does not signify a large hotel. The Bahia Palace has only 101 rooms and an enormous Presidential Suite. This is an ideal hotel for families as 5 of the rooms, which are in fact senior suites, can accommodate up to 2 adults and 2 children (under 12). The hotel provides a free shuttle service into Ponta Delgada at 10.00am every morning with a return at 4.00pm. The traditional town of Vila Franca do Campo, the old capital of Sao Miguel is 5km away. For the more energetic, Lagoa do Fogo is a 2.5 hour hike each way.
